The short answer. If you have one day, take Loch Ness. It is nine hours against twelve, it costs less, and low cloud barely touches it. Take Skye if you have two days, a good forecast, and mountains rather than history are the reason you came north.

These are the two days everyone weighs against each other, and the tour listings will not help you choose because both are sold on the same adjectives. Set the hours and the weather risk side by side and the answer usually falls out. Both sit near the top of the Isle of Skye tours from Inverness.

The real tension is not scenery, it is hours

Skye is spectacular and nobody argues otherwise. The question is what twelve hours in a seat costs you, both in the day itself and in the one after it. You leave before eight and get back around eight, and roughly seven of those hours are moving.

The Loch Ness day is nine hours with much less driving, because everything on it is within about ninety minutes of the city. You come back with an evening still in front of you.

Weather decides more than either brochure admits

This is the argument that should settle it. A Skye day is a mountain day, and the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing and the Cuillin all disappear under low cloud. You will still have driven twelve hours.

A Loch Ness day is a water-and-history day. Rain at Urquhart Castle or on the moor at Culloden gives you much the same visit as sunshine. If the forecast is poor and you only have one day, the choice makes itself. The month-by-month page has the daylight as well.

The gates are different in kind

On Loch Ness, the ticket is buyable and worth buying: £14 online for Urquhart Castle, and two fares include it outright. On Skye, no fare includes Eilean Donan and the view most people came for is from the shore anyway, which costs nothing.

So the Skye day has a lower gate cost and a higher time cost. The Loch Ness day is the reverse.

What each one actually gives you

  • Loch Ness: the castle, the loch, usually Culloden and the Clava Cairns, often a distillery, sometimes a boat. History with water around it.
  • Skye: Eilean Donan on the way, then Portree, the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and either the Quiraing or the Fairy Pools. Landscape, at a scale nothing near Inverness matches.

If you have two days, do both — in this order

Skye first, on the better forecast, because it is the day the weather can ruin. Loch Ness second, because it works in anything. Do not try to combine them: Skye routes drive past the loch to get west, but they do not stop.

What the fares really compare

The headline prices sit about twenty dollars apart, which makes them look like near neighbours. They are not, once you add what each day asks of you. The Skye day costs three more hours of your life and an evening you will not use. The Loch Ness day costs a castle ticket you may want to buy.

Put the gates in and the gap narrows further. A Loch Ness day with the Urquhart entry added lands close to the Skye fare. A Skye day with Eilean Donan added is well past it. Neither is expensive for what it is — the planning page sets out the all-in arithmetic.

Departure points and start times differ too

The Skye coaches leave from Railway Terrace behind the station. The Loch Ness days mostly go from Union Street or the bus station. Both start early, but only one of them asks you to be somewhere at 7:45 and then keeps you out until eight at night.

If you are arriving the night before, that matters. If you are leaving the next morning, it matters more. All nine kerbs are here, and getting to Inverness covers the trains and the sleeper.

What you will remember of each

People come back from Skye talking about one view, usually the Storr or the ridge above the Quiraing, and about how long the road was. They come back from a Loch Ness day talking about the guide. That is not an accident: the Loch Ness routes have more stops, more history and more time out of the vehicle, so the person driving has more to work with.

Neither is the better day in the abstract. If landscape is what moves you, Skye has no rival within reach of this city. If you would rather understand a place than photograph it, the loch and the battlefield give you more to hold on to.

It is also worth saying that Skye is not a secret. In July the Storr car park fills and the roadside stops are shared with several coaches. The Great Glen absorbs visitors better, partly because it is longer and partly because half its stops are free and spread out.

Verdict, by who you are

  • One day, any forecast: Loch Ness.
  • One day, settled weather, you came for mountains: Skye.
  • Two days: both, Skye first.
  • Travelling with young children: Loch Ness — twelve hours is a long time in a seat, and the minimum ages are lower.
  • Winter: Loch Ness. Six and a half hours of December daylight does not cover a Skye day.
  • Returning visitors: Skye, and give it two days rather than one. You have already done the loch.

One last practical note. Whichever you pick, book it for the middle of your stay rather than the first or last morning. A twelve-hour day on an arrival day is a gamble against a delayed train, and on a departure day it is a gamble against your own flight.
