No — an Edinburgh to Inverness tour is not something this catalogue carries, and it is worth saying plainly because people search for it. Every tour listed starts in Inverness itself or at the Invergordon cruise port, and none of them departs Edinburgh. Travel up by train or by road first, then book a Highland day from the city.

It depends on the operator, and the minimum ages genuinely differ: some will not carry a child under five, others set the floor at four, one at three and one at six. Under-18s must be accompanied. A twelve-hour Skye day is a long time in a seat for a small child, and the shorter Loch Ness runs suit families better.

It is a long day and the driving is most of it — Skye is a fair distance west of Inverness. If that sounds like too much, the two-day tour splits the same ground over a night on the island, and the Loch Ness days are half the length for a similar fare.

Less than people expect on most routes: the stops are viewpoints, villages and castle grounds. Two exceptions are worth knowing. The Fairy Pools are a river walk over uneven ground, and Urquhart Castle is a ruin on a slope with a lot of steps.

Not properly. Every Skye tour runs down the side of Loch Ness to get west, so you will see the water, but the stops are on the island. If you want both with time at each, give them a day apiece.

No. Dunrobin opens 1 April to 31 October only, and the far-north tours run outside that window as well as inside it. Between November and March the castle stop is the outside of the building. The castle also posts last-minute closures on its social media rather than its website.

The 2026 morning service runs from Monday 1 June to Friday 23 October, seven days a week, with an afternoon service from Wednesday 10 June to Friday 25 September. Outside those dates the Glenfinnan day tours still run, but the train does not, so you will see the viaduct rather than cross it.

The places are real and mostly older than the books. Clava Cairns is a Bronze Age burial site, Culloden is the 1746 battlefield itself, and Beauly Priory, Fort George and Castle Leod are all genuine historic buildings you can visit. Several tours are built around them.
