Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle From Inverness

Loch Ness fills the floor of the Great Glen for twenty-odd miles south-west of Inverness. Almost every day tour out of the city drives at least part of it. What separates those days is not the water — they all see the same water. What differs is where they stop, how long you get, and whether your fare takes you through the gate. Urquhart Castle, and the ticket that decides the day

The ruin on the headland at Strone is the picture everybody has seen: a broken tower above the deepest reach of the loch. You will find it about two miles from Drumnadrochit, off the A82. It is run by Historic Environment Scotland, and it is the one paid gate on the whole loch.

An adult pays £14 booked online and £16 at the door. Concessions are £11 and £13, and children aged 7 to 15 pay £8.50 and £9.50. Opening runs 9.30am to 8.15pm from April to August, then 6pm in September and 5pm in October. From November to March it closes at 4.30pm. Last entry is always an hour before that, and the castle is shut on 25 and 26 December.

The loch itself

It is long, narrow and very dark. Peat washed off the surrounding hills stains the water brown and kills the visibility a few feet down, which is as good an explanation as any for why the monster story has lasted. The hills come down steeply on both sides, so there is no coast road in the usual sense. The A82 runs the western shore; the much quieter B862 and B852 run the eastern, and you will notice the difference in traffic.

Fort Augustus and the Caledonian Canal

Fort Augustus sits at the south-western end of the loch. It is where the Caledonian Canal steps down into the water, through a staircase of locks in the middle of the village. Watching a boat work through takes half an hour and is the best free thing on the loch. One day tour gives you three hours here, which is enough for the locks and lunch both.

Dores, Foyers and the quiet eastern shore

The eastern side is the one most coaches skip. Dores has a shingle beach at the Inverness end, with a long view down the whole loch. The Falls of Foyers drop through woodland a few miles further on, and that one is a short steep walk down to a viewing platform and back up again. Some routes take the eastern shore rather than the A82, and they are quieter days for it.

Getting on the water

A cruise changes the scale of the place. From the middle of the loch the hills look like what they are, and the castle only really makes sense from the water. A handful of fares put you on a boat. Most include the cruise outright; one sells a thirty-minute sailing as a checkout option, so read the booking page rather than the headline.

What else is on a Loch Ness day

Very few of these days are only the loch. Most pair it with Culloden Battlefield and the Clava Cairns, east of the city. Some add a distillery, and the longer ones run on to Glen Affric or the west coast. If the battlefield is the part you care about, start with Culloden and Clava instead. If it is the scenery you want, the Isle of Skye days go considerably further for similar money.
