The routes people write about most are the long ones: the Isle of Skye in the west, and the run north to Dunrobin Castle and John O'Groats. Closer to hand, the reviews cover the loch, the battlefield, and Inverness Castle in the middle of the city.
Two things recur across every route. The first is the driver-guide: people name them, by first name, far more often than they mention a view. The second is the gates — the surprise is always a castle that turned out to be extra, most often Eilean Donan Castle on a Skye day or the exhibition at Culloden Battlefield.
